Cliff Stoll reminds me of L from Death Note
I previously knew him from his talks on YouTube about topology and Klein bottles. But then I saw this one:
Two of my favourite things about L came to mind:
He has his feet up on his chair that way L does.
And his persistent curiosity tracking someone down.
Not to say they're the same in general - Cliff also has this amazing physical enthusiasm when he's explaining stuff, and L seemed dangerous and more serious.

Having a sticky post welcoming the types of comment you want (where the commenters might otherwise be unsure) seems like a good idea.

Following people on mastodon and Pleroma with RSS / atom
I haven't tested it yet but all the parts look like they should works:
Mastodon at least generates rss / atom according to https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16755553
Not sure about Pleroma though.
You may need to view source for that, but there are ways to view source on iOS browsers that don't have it built in according to http://osxdaily.com/2012/03/30/view-source-safari-ipad-iphone/ - or someone could do it on a computer and post the information.
Dreamwidth has rss following capability - feeds can be added on the read / feeds page at https://www.dreamwidth.org/feeds/

Learning to use dreamwidth
I just noticed I can look at other people's "reading" pages, so that's helpful if I'm not subscribed to many people.
Also I might not want to make a post for every minor discovery like this, so this post is here for me or others to add them as comments. I have IP tracking is turned off for comments (for logged in users)
Has anyone tried using the bell icon to track when posts get comments?

I'm interested in how to make better social networks so I've been reading the post tumblr fandom community and made this comment: https://post-tumblr-fandom.dreamwidth.org/2135.html?thread=16215#cmt16215
You could have something that's administratively like a mastodon server, where the server owner can delete things from it if legally required, and process DMCA notifications, but part of the bandwidth for serving files from it would be provided by its members on a p2p basis. Since the server is a larger target and does DMCA stuff, the users are less likely to get in trouble (I'm not a lawyer and I don't know how much this would help). The members' computers serving files on behalf of the server would stop if the server blocked/deleted the file.
To avoid being a walled garden the servers could federate with servers in other countries, as they do with mastodon, but not serve files on behalf of the other server (the users can connect to the other servers directly)
People who don't want to have their posts controlled by someone else's server could run their own servers, so the server software should be made as easy to run as possible, and also there should be a way to back up your posts without running a server.
